Watch a fast template operator load panels and the secret is not speed — it is that they never decide anything. The panel drops, slides, meets foam on two sides, done. What foam fences actually do
A fence converts placement from measurement into touch. Instead of aligning fabric to a printed line (slow, judgment-dependent), the operator pushes the panel against raised foam edges that stop it in exactly the right spot. Loading time drops, and — more valuable — loading variance drops, because every operator’s touch against a fence is the same.
Foam, not hard plastic, because a hard fence bruises delicate goods and shaves fibers off cut edges. Foam locates firmly and forgives.
Formats and how to choose
Thickness (1–5 mm): match the fabric. The fence must stand proud of the fabric enough to be felt: 1–2 mm for shirting and light wovens, 3 mm for mid-weight, 4–5 mm for denim, fleece and padded panels. Too thin and edges ride over it; too thick and it shadows the seam area and slows unloading.
Length format: match the fence, mind the box. 1 m strips suit long straight fences (plackets, quilting frames) — fewer joints, cleaner lines. 28 cm shorts suit the small fences that dominate pocket/collar/cuff work, waste less per fence, and come 300–500 per box against the 1 m format’s smaller counts — so the shorts are usually the volume workhorse. Blocks (50 × 50 cm) for custom shapes. Curved fences, corner stops and filler pads get knife-cut from blocks in the same thickness range — keep a couple of sheets per thickness at the bench.
Placement rules from production rooms
Fence two edges, not four — an over-fenced template is slow to load and unload; two reference edges (typically the seam-critical ones) locate a panel completely. Set fences to the panel’s actual cut size, not nominal — measure real panels from cutting. Keep foam clear of the groove by a finger’s width so the presser foot never touches it. Wear and replacement
Foam dies by compression: it stops springing back, and the fence goes mushy — placement drifts a millimetre here and there, and defect rates creep before anyone connects the cause. Check foam at every template rebuild; peel, re-stick, done in minutes.
