How to Make a Sewing Template: Step-by-Step Guide for Garment Factories

The full workflow for making a garment sewing template on plastic: CAD design, choosing PVC or epoxy sheet, CNC groove cutting, taping, grip strips, pins and testing.

Every garment template — from a simple label jig to a full down-jacket quilting frame — is built with the same six-step workflow. This guide walks through it as done in production template rooms, with notes on where quality is won or lost. Step 1: Design the template in CAD

Start from the garment’s pattern file. In your CAD system (or the software bundled with your cutting machine), lay out: the fabric position, marked by fences and stops; the stitching path, offset into a groove; and the template outline with room for clips and handling.

Two design decisions matter most. First, register the fabric to seams, not edges — fabric edges vary, seam lines do not. Second, decide how the template opens: single-flap, book-style or sliding, based on how the operator will load the piece.

Add a groove-width allowance for your machine’s presser foot, and set tool compensation in software rather than adjusting the drawing.

Step 2: Choose the sheet material and thickness

For most templates, the stack is two layers of transparent rigid PVC template sheet: a base of 1.5–2 mm and a top flap of 0.8–1.5 mm. Transparency lets the operator see the fabric; colored sheet is sometimes used to color-code operations or sizes.

Switch to fiberglass epoxy board when the template will see high-speed automatic sewing, hot or abrasive conditions, or when a thin-but-stiff layer (down to 0.3 mm) is needed. Epoxy costs more per sheet and needs corn-teeth bits to cut, so most rooms reserve it for the templates that earn it.

Step 3: Cut outline and grooves on the CNC machine

Fix the sheet on the vacuum table over a felt underlay, load the correct bit — single-flute for PVC, corn-teeth for epoxy — and run a test groove on scrap to verify width and edge quality. Then cut: grooves first, outline last, so the sheet stays held while the fine work happens.

Clean edges are non-negotiable; a ragged groove frays thread and scratches fabric. If grooves come out melted or chattery, fix spindle speed and feed before blaming the material. Machine selection and settings are covered in our template cutting machine guide.

No CNC yet? For samples, the manual route works: print the design, spray-glue it to the sheet, cut with a hook knife, and smooth the groove with folded sandpaper. It is fine for proving a concept — not for production.

Step 4: Assemble the layers

Join base and top layers with double-sided cloth tape — cloth-based tape holds through hundreds of open-close cycles and peels off cleanly at rebuild time. Fiberglass-mesh double-sided tape is the upgrade where flaps take real stress.

Build the hinge side first, check alignment against the CAD drawing with the layers closed, then tape the remaining contact surfaces. Misalignment at this step is the most common reason a finished template sews a beautiful seam in the wrong place.

Step 5: Add grip, fences and closures

Now make the template hold fabric like it means it:

Sandpaper grip strips (adhesive-backed) go along both sides of the groove on the fabric-contact faces — they stop the creep that causes puckering. Foam edge strips form soft fences that locate the panel on loading; use 1–3 mm foam matched to fabric thickness. Template pins — ribbed anti-slip pins for slippery shells — lock layers through the fabric where needed. For automatic template sewing machines, glue the recognition chip in its marked corner so the machine loads the right program on insertion.

Step 6: Test, adjust, and put it to work

Sew five pieces on scrap fabric. Check seam position against spec, look for drag marks, and watch the operator load the template — hesitation means the fences or opening direction need rework. Adjust, re-test, then label the template (style, operation, size, date) and rack it.

What plastic is used to make sewing templates?

Factories use rigid PVC sheet, usually 0.8–2 mm per layer, because it cuts cleanly on a CNC router and stays dimensionally stable. For high-wear templates, fiberglass epoxy board from 0.3 to 3 mm replaces PVC.

Can I make a sewing template without a CNC machine?

Yes, for samples: print the seam path, glue it to PVC sheet, cut the outline and grooves with a hook knife, and finish edges with sandpaper. It works for one-offs but hand-cut grooves are not consistent enough for production runs.

How wide should the stitching groove be?

Wide enough for the presser foot or needle clearance of your machine, typically only a few millimetres. The exact width is set in the cutting software as tool compensation and should be tested on scrap sheet before cutting the real template.

How long does a PVC template last?

It depends on the operation and stitch count, but a well-built PVC template survives thousands of cycles. When grooves wear or layers loosen, worn tapes and grip strips are replaced rather than remaking the whole template.
