Selection & application

Building foam edge strips into fences that load themselves

Fence two reference edges, not four — two soft stops locate a panel completely and keep loading and unloading fast.

Match thickness to fabric: 1–2 mm for shirting, 3 mm for mid-weight goods, and 4–5 mm for denim and padded panels. The fence must stand proud enough to feel, yet low enough not to shadow the seam.

Use 28 cm shorts for the small fences that dominate pocket and cuff work; 1 m lengths for plackets and frames; cut custom curves from 50 × 50 cm blocks in short segments rather than bending one long strip into a kink. Replace on function: foam that stays compressed gives a mushy stop and placement starts drifting before anyone sees why.
